Shifting your habits: The negative impacts of disposable nappies

Ben and I haven’t always been the perfect parents. Ha! No seriously, we try our best, but what’s important to us has evolved over time. We have become more educated and more eco conscious and in response we have shifted our habits.

Here’s a few facts that have motivated us:

  • 2 billion disposable nappies go into landfill every year in Australia.
  • Disposable nappies are estimated to take up to 500 years to decompose.
  • It takes 3 x more energy, 20 x more raw materials and 2 x more water to make a disposable nappy compared to a re-useable one.
  • Even after taking into account the materials and energy used to make modern cloth nappies, together with the energy, water and detergent required to wash them, re-useable nappies are by far the better option when it comes to environmental sustainability.

So, for a single use item, disposable nappies have a huge negative impact on the environment. But the tired, time poor you could not even consider making the switch to reusable nappies because it’s “just too hard”, and we get that, life is busy.

That’s why we started Little Eco Baby Nappy Service. To help time poor parents make more positive choices for their families. We do all the work for you! Assembled, hygienic and individualised sets of modern cloth nappies delivered to your door twice a week.

As Ben likes to say, #shittyjob but that’s the whole point, you don’t have to do it! You save loads of time and still get to make a difference #smallchangebigdifference (thought I’d squeeze in one more hashtag just in case you want to follow us on instagram!)
